on the upcoming deepseek price increase we've been able to reproduce their current prices even on rented GPUs so this likely isn't because they're "losing money" it's traffic shaping because they are…

  • @LacoMokry (83): @thdxr Reproduce their prices really? Would spell big implications for their supposedly legendary infra team.
  • @1kartikkabadi1 (74): @thdxr They're simply out of compute. I hope the US providers and OpenCode's prices stay the same though 🙏
  • @antoinecojp (50): @thdxr Very good news. Was also curious because we should know by now how expensive it is to run it. Does it mean we can use it soon outside China from opencode go?
  • @NateHelmig (24): @thdxr holy shit... so are you saying its real... they really are that cheap while being this good?
  • @HaseebMir91 (21): @thdxr Why people are not hosting DSFV4 to their own servers and provide it as a service for cheaper prices? @thdxr Its possible for your team right to do that.

PSA: Most biglab people now read almost zero papers and understand ICLR/ICML/NeurIPS to be mainly full of overclaims & fraud. (but there are a few diamonds in the rough of course)

  • @kellerjordan0 (243): ^ This is obvious to everyone who has connections, but I think not necessarily obvious to the majority of students who aren’t as well-connected. Therefore it should be repeated every so often
  • @willdepue (101): @kellerjordan0 most papers feel like theyre just cargo culting research for hiring purposes, very disappointing
  • @BlancheMinerva (59): @kellerjordan0 I really dislike that you said “big lab” as if this is some secret that all the super smart kids at the wealthiest companies do, instead of just a true statement about leaders in the field regardless of where they work.
  • @alex_peys (42): @kellerjordan0 this is true of all academic papers, it's more obvious in cs/ml because the code is forced to be open and we can try to replicate it. other disciplines hide it with "data available upon request"
  • @MathewShen42 (24): @kellerjordan0 Thank you for the reminder. It seems we have entered an era that demands a revaluation of all values.

  • @zswaff (3): @OpenAI it's always very tempting to just max out that slider, even when the question is what should i have for breakfast. eventually the model should figure out the right setting itself - less friction!
  • @ATMFL80 (1): @OpenAI I'm going to set it to max for "what restaurant should we go to" and low for every other major life decision.
  • @Lioraglitter (1): @OpenAI Speaking as an iOS app user… I really, really do not like this slide bar. What about the option to choose what kind of design we can use? Some people, like me, might like the old selection more, some prefer this slide bar. A customisation could benefit more people😊

Born Against, or why hobby programming communities are against LLM usage

  • @bigfishrunning (0): Programming generates programmers, and programs are a side-effect.
  • @analog31 (0): One factor is that we struggled for a long time under proprietary tooling, and don't want to go back there.
  • @QuantumNoodle (0): A hobby is something you enjoy the process of doing, not just the end result. Everybody likes a clean home, but cleaning is rarely a hobby. LLMs expedite achieving the end result. Take from that what you will.
  • @happytoexplain (0): Yes, hobbyists are less interested than businesses in automating their own hobby.

Almost no skill required to cook a steak

Markdown

  • @Sea-Cauliflower-8935 (60): We've reached a point where building a good chat platform isn't the hardest part anymore. There are plenty of solid alternatives. The bigger challenge is giving communities a reason to move when all of their members, history and workflows already live somewhere else.
